Though Williams has said her goodbyes to tennis, New Yorkers still have the chance to say their goodbyes to her…kind of!
Now through Monday, September 12, visitors can take photos with Williams’ wax figure in the lobby of InterContinental New York Times Square, courtesy of Madame Tussauds NY, and many have already taken their photos, including world-famous tennis player Carlos Alcaraz!
After the photo-op guests can watch live streams of the U.S Open at the hotel’s cocktail lounge and restaurant, The Stinger, while sipping on their signature cocktail the Honey Deuce.
When talking about tennis there’s no conversation without Serena Williams. The 23-time Grand Slam champion became a tennis pro at the early age of 14, and this past Friday, September 2, she seemingly bid adieu to tennis after losing in the third round of the U.S. Open to Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.
Williams had recently announced in an interview which she shared to her Instagram her intentions to say goodbye to tennis, stating, “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena.”
Though it doesn’t sound as if she closed the door to tennis completely, we can only guess this past U.S. Open will be the last tournament she competes in.
Serena Williams made a huge impact in the world of tennis, and though it’s sad to see her walk away from the game, we’ll always stand beside her, whether that means literally next to her wax figure or figuratively.
