Vodka- and schmaltz-fueled parties are making a comeback as NYC institution Sammy’s Roumanian Steak House has announced they’ll return to the Lower East Side this April! They’ll open at their new on Monday, April 22nd.
The restaurant shared in an Instagram post:
Exciting announcement! 📣 Sammy’s is making a comeback and we couldn’t be happier to return to the Lower East Side ❤️ Huge thanks to our loyal customers and fans for keeping the Sammy’s spirit alive over the years.
After opening in 1974, Sammy’s Roumanian Steak House occupied a grungy basement-level space on the LES’ Chrystie Street for nearly 50 years.
In a short time they had become known as a true NYC institution bursting with character: from their unassuming basement home to their wide-array of Jewish-Romanian food. And you can’t forget the ice shots of vodka!
Sammy’s sadly closed in January 2021 after being shuttered since March 2020 due to the pandemic, though at the time owner David Zimmerman hinted at a future return, stating:
We may be closed now, but when all this is over and we feel safe enough to hold hands during the hora, we will be back stronger, louder, and tastier than ever before.
And now they’re gearing up for their return!
Sammy’s Roumanian Steak House reopens to the public this month for a two-night Passover special–April 22nd and 23rd–and be open every Friday and Saturday in May. By June the restaurant will host their grand opening and return to operating daily.
The best part–they’ll be reopening with their original menu and staff!
