REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.), a nature lover’s go-to for all things outdoorsy, has announced that its SoHo flagship–the retailer’s only NYC location–will close its doors for good in late 2026.
The Washington-based outdoor apparel and equipment retailer, which runs as an employee-owned cooperative, announced the closure on Tuesday, October 7th. According to Commercial Observer an REI spokesperson said in a statement:
After thoughtful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close our SoHo store in late 2026. Since opening in 2011, this location has held a special place for us and we are grateful to our team, our members and customers, and the broader community for their support over the past 15 years.
The 35,000-square-foot storefront opened in SoHo’s historic Puck Building in 2011 as one of the chain’s “most extensive restoration projects.” The location featured exposed brick walls and ceilings from the 1890s, original chandeliers, and original wood repurposed as cashier counters and display tables.
While the news comes as a blow to New Yorkers, we’re not entirely shocked.
The retailer recently reported a decline in net sales, going from $3.85 billion in 2022 to $3.53 billion in 2024. Earlier this year after reaching a “break-even” point financially, the retailer announced its plan to lay off more than 400 employees as well as shutter its adventure tourism packages, which offered things such as day tours and classes.

The SoHo and Boston locations were among 11 REI stores to successfully unionize in recent years.
The good news: we still have some time before we say goodbye.
New Yorkers in need of ski boots, camping gear, backpacks, or even kayaks still have time to head over to 303 Lafayette Street to do some shopping. Co-op members also have plenty of time to take advantage of the retailer’s yearlong, no-questions-asked return policy in person. Non-members have 90 days for returns.
REI locations in Paramus, NJ and Boston, MA will also shut down next year. The retailer still has several remaining stores throughout New York state, including two on Long Island in Carle Place (144 Glen Cove Rd) and Huntington Station (350 Walt Whitman Rd).
