The nationwide wave of restaurant closures has officially hit the heart of New York City. After an impressive 23-year run, the massive Red Lobster in Times Square is permanently shutting its doors on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Located at 5 Times Square since 2003, this bustling seafood haven has served countless tourists and theatergoers. However, the beloved corner spot is no longer viable for the massive chain.
Why the Times Square location is shutting down
According to the company, extensive and prolonged building construction has severely impacted the restaurant’s visibility, access, and overall foot traffic.
The closure isn’t just about a drop in hungry tourists, though. The property is currently slated for a massive conversion into residential housing, making continued restaurant operations impossible. On top of that, the location faced a staggering annual rent demand of approximately $2.2 million.
In a statement, Red Lobster noted that Times Square has been an important chapter in their history and called the shutdown a difficult decision.
Fortunately, displaced team members are being supported. Employees will receive additional transition pay and the opportunity to transfer to a Red Lobster location of their choice.
The end of an era for NYC
If you live in the five boroughs, losing this specific location stings a bit more. This Times Square outpost was the chain’s only remaining location in New York City.
This shutdown is part of a much larger corporate restructuring effort. Over 100 Red Lobster locations have closed nationwide following the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May 2024.
If you want one last crack at a platter of endless shrimp or a final plate of Cheddar Bay Biscuits under the neon lights, you only have until June 14 to make it happen.
