Though it’s not the most popular holiday of the year, there’d be no Groundhog Day without Punxsutawney Phil (though they are trying to replace him with a giant gold coin) and Phil has some exciting news–he’s now a dad!
Two healthy baby groundhogs were born on Saturday, March 23rd.
The exciting news was announced via their Facebook page, with a post stating:
We have Babies!! The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club is very excited to announce that Phil and Phyllis have given birth to two healthy baby Groundhogs! The babies are currently in with mom and dad at the zoo that is located at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, and can be viewed thru the viewing window!
ABC 7 writes that the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has stated that Phil is 138 years old, so he’s hardly a young dad. The club has chalked his age up to “drinking the elixir of life.”
The two baby groundhogs are Phil’s first kids.
