New York City is finally giving hip-hop the ultimate hometown educational tribute.
The Bronx School of Hip-Hop is officially opening its doors in Claremont this September. The brand-new public high school is the first of its kind in the nation.
It honors the birthplace of the genre by making it the absolute foundation of the classroom.
A curriculum rooted in culture
Incoming principal Jason Reyes and city officials are completely reimagining how students learn. Instead of standard lectures, students will dive into core academics through the lens of hip-hop culture.
A literature class might compare the rhetorical devices in Kendrick Lamar’s album To Pimp a Butterfly alongside classic novels like Catcher in the Rye.
Meanwhile, math classes could use pattern recognition in music to teach algebraic equations.
Preparing students for the industry
According to NYC.gov, the curriculum goes far beyond the history of the genre. The school will offer hands-on training and certifications in audio engineering, digital media, graphic design, and financial literacy.
Students can even earn college credits through planned partnerships with Lehman College and Bronx Community College. It’s all about giving local kids the exact tools they need to succeed in the modern music industry or higher education.
The school is bringing in serious industry heavyweights to guide the program. Advisors include hip-hop pioneers like Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Special Ed.
Honoring a global movement
In its first year, the school will welcome about 115 to 125 ninth graders, eventually expanding to a full 9-12 high school.
It’s part of a broader push by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels to open five new tailored public schools across the city this fall to combat overcrowding and engage students.
Ever since DJ Kool Herc sparked a global movement at a back-to-school party on Sedgwick Avenue in 1973, hip-hop has been the Bronx’s biggest export. Now, it’s finally coming home to the classroom.
