Depois de mais de uma década e um custo de US$ 47,5 milhões, o Hudson River Park Trust comemorou oficialmente a abertura do Pier 97 Park, um espaço verde público de 2,5 acres com um grande playground, campo de atletismo, gramado inclinado, deck ao pôr do sol com mesas e cadeiras, passeios a pé e espaço para reuniões.
E você realmente se sentirá como se tivesse sido transportado para um mundo totalmente novo, já que as barreiras e cercas que cercavam o parque nos últimos anos foram substituídas por 16.000 pés quadrados de flores e plantas.
Os nova-iorquinos esperavam há mais de uma década pela abertura do parque – ele estava vazio desde 2013, antes que o planejamento para o projeto do parque começasse em 2018. As projeções foram lançadas em 2019 com uma data inicial de abertura em 2022, embora somente em dezembro de 2023 partes do píer tenham começado a ser abertas ao público. A data de abertura foi então adiada para a primavera deste ano, embora não tenha sido aberta até o início desta semana, terça-feira, 15 de outubro de 2024.
O Pier 97 Park está localizado em frente à West 57th Street, em Hell’s Kitchen. Composto por uma mistura única de espaços recreativos e de descanso para os visitantes desfrutarem, incluindo:
- Um playground com uma estrutura de escalada de corda de 26 pés de altura, casco de navio e recursos sazonais de spray de água
- Um campo de grama sintética de 120 pés de comprimento que pode abrigar uma variedade de esportes e atividades
- Um gramado inclinado de 7.600 pés quadrados que oferece um espaço verde exuberante para relaxar e estruturas esculturais para fazer sombra
- Um escorregador de granito para todas as idades que conecta o mirante elevado e o mirante sombreado na borda norte do píer
- Um deck ao pôr do sol com mesas de bistrô, espreguiçadeiras, paredes de dois níveis com assentos e vistas deslumbrantes
- Áreas de reunião flexíveis cercadas por flores e plantas
- Um calçadão para caminhadas ao longo da borda sul do píer
Um novo edifício do parque, imediatamente ao norte do Pier 97, também deverá ser inaugurado neste inverno, com a construção quase concluída. O prédio abrigará banheiros públicos, uma concessão e uma pequena área de manutenção do parque.
O presidente do bairro de Manhattan, Mark Levine, declarou: “O Pier 97 é um sonho que se tornou realidade para Hell’s Kitchen, para o Hudson River Park e para todos que gostam de passar o tempo à beira do rio. Há algo para todos no Pier 97”, acrescentou o congressista Jerrold Nadler:
Com novos espaços públicos abertos para os nova-iorquinos e visitantes se reunirem e se divertirem no rio, com concessões, playgrounds e banheiros, o Pier 97 será um dos principais destinos aqui em Nova York.
Além do parque, o Trust está trabalhando com o NYS DOT para melhorar as ciclovias e caminhos para pedestres existentes entre a W 57th Street e a W 59th Street. Depois de concluídas, essas melhorias criarão uma ligação perfeita com a Empire State Trail entre o Hudson River Park e o Riverside Park South.
