Todos os olhos estão voltados para o New York Liberty, campeão da WNBA pela primeira vez, após a vitória histórica contra o Minnesota Lynx no domingo, 20 de outubro, no Barclay’s Center.
As coisas ficaram tensas no Brooklyn durante o jogo 5, mas, por fim, o New York Liberty conseguiu fazer o placar de 67 a 62 na prorrogação, garantindo sua primeira vitória na história da franquia.
Considerando que faz mais de 20 anos que o time não chega às finais e depois de uma temporada tão bem-sucedida como a de temporada de 2024a vitória foi bem merecida e um ótimo motivo para os nova-iorquinos comemorarem. Os destaques do jogo incluem 17 pontos de Jonquel Jones – que foi nomeada MVP das finais da WNBA – e 13 pontos de Breanna Stewart.
“Isso significa tudo”, disse Stewart à ESPN, de acordo com o USA Today. “Eu queria vir para cá e queria ser a pessoa certa. Lutamos muito porque queríamos trazer o prêmio para esta cidade e para este público.”
A comemoração continuará, pois cinco edifícios de Nova York se iluminarão de azul em homenagem à vitória do New York Liberty na segunda-feira, 21 de outubro, incluindo: City Hall, Brooklyn Borough Hall, Queens Borough Hall, Staten Island Borough Hall e The David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building.
Além disso, a equipe terá um desfile, embora os detalhes ainda não tenham sido definidos.
“Em um momento em que o resto do país está finalmente reconhecendo o talento infinito da nossa WNBA, estamos orgulhosos de ver a cidade de Nova York levar o troféu para casa”, disse o prefeito Eric Adams em um comunicado, segundo a NBC. “Aos nossos campeões da WNBA, obrigado por serem um exemplo para a nossa cidade e por demonstrarem os valores de coragem, determinação e trabalho duro. Agora, mal podemos esperar para comemorar fora da quadra e fazer o desfile que vocês merecem pelo Canyon of Heroes!”
