The start of Memorial Day Weekend always marks the unofficial start of the summer season. As the weather starts warming up over the next month, the inevitable crowd of city dwellers/tourists will start planning their trips to the two most popular destinations in New York for relaxing, partying, good seafood and of course, surfing!
Thus our guides for making the most of your time in the Hamptons and Montauk begin with the best locations for a proper day out shredding some waves. This article specifically focuses on Montauk, because its location at the very end of Long Island, makes it the perfect place for finding the biggest waves in all of New York.
1. Ditch Plains
Surfers will rate this as the best on the list, because of the long peeling waves that form due to the surface of the ocean being rocky instead of sandy. It’s pretty packed all year round, especially during peak season and will probably intimidate the beginners out there as they try to fight for the waves with experienced surf bros.
2. Camp Hero
If you’re trying to find a somewhat hidden spot where you won’t be overwhelmed with hoards of people, then Camp Hero is your best bet. Its hard to reach location (you have to scale a cliff to get to it) makes it one of the few havens in the busy Montauk area.
3. Turtle Cove
Located on the South and West side of the Montauk Point Lighthouse, this is another classic spot to find packs of surfers, who will tell you the waves here are almost as good as the Ditch Plains waves. The best time to come is right after a big storm, when the swells reach peak heights.
4. Gin Beach
For the less experienced surfers out there, we recommend trying out Gin Beach as you’ll find the water is relatively calm. Make sure to wear water shoes because it’s quite pebbly which we know is not a fun experience for walking barefoot.
5. Kirk Park Beach
Kirk Park is rated one of the most beautiful and clean beaches in Montauk, making it the best one for a family day out. Its proximity to the town makes it the perfect place to grab a quick lunch or drink after a long, tiring surf.
