Ever wanted to hang out with penguins but rather not make the trek to Antarctica, South Georgia or Patagonia? The Long Island Aquarium offers a unique experience, known as the Penguin Encounter, that gets you up close and personal with real-life penguins.
The experience lasts for a total of 30 minutes to get an in-depth look at the care that goes into the African penguins in the aquarium. Imagine seeing the cute little birds swim, waddle and as the aquarium’s website says, shake their tail feather. If you’re extra lucky, you might even get to pet a penguin!
Of course, you’ll be guided by one of the aquarium expert animal handlers. Due to this, and how the penguins are feeling that day, experiences will differ each time.
Best of all, participants can take photos of their entire experience to remember it forever.
Please note, you must be timely or else you could miss the encounter. Do not show up more than five minutes late. Learn more on the Long Island Aquarium website.
Though the experience is outside of NYC, it’s only about a two-hour drive to the Long Island Aquarium. If you don’t have a car, you can take the LIRR towards Ronkonkoma and transfer on the LIRR towards Greenport and get a quick Uber from there.
