Commuting across the Hudson River is about to get slightly more expensive starting next week.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is officially implementing its planned fare hike for the PATH train, bumping the cost of a single ride from $3.00 to $3.25 starting May 4, 2026.
This marks the first step in a gradual series of price increases approved late last year, but there is a massive silver lining for weekend riders to soften the blow.
Why is the PATH train fare increasing?
Nobody loves a price jump, but this extra quarter is actually funding some seriously overdue upgrades to the century-old rail system.
The Port Authority authorized these fare adjustments back in December 2025 to pay for the “PATH Forward” modernization program.
This $430 million project involves laying down miles of new track, updating ancient switching equipment, and bringing brand new train cars to the rails.
The base fare will eventually creep up to $4.00 by 2029, so riders should prepare for additional 25-cent bumps each January over the next few years.
Here is the new PATH fare breakdown
While the standard single ride is going up, commuters who buy trips in bulk can still snag a slight discount.
With the ongoing rollout of the new tap-to-pay TAPP system, riders have a few options to save some cash.
- Single Ride (TAPP, SmartLink, SingleRide Ticket, Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard): $3.25
- 10-Trip on TAPP Card: $31.00 ($3.10 per ride)
- 20-Trip on TAPP Card: $62.00 ($3.10 per ride)
- 40-Trip on TAPP Card: $124.00 ($3.10 per ride)
- TAPP Unlimited 30-Day Pass: $131.50
The Port Authority website outlines that SmartLink cards are slowly being phased out this year.
Fortunately, unlimited passes will finally be available on TAPP starting on May 4, so you can officially ditch the plastic card and just use your phone or contactless credit card at the turnstile.

Major weekend service upgrades are coming
Paying more for public transit is a tough pill to swallow, but riders are actually getting a massive return on their investment this month.
Starting on May 17, PATH is restoring seven-day service across all four of its lines for the very first time in nearly 25 years.
This means weekend warriors will finally have access to direct Journal Square to 33rd Street service between 10:00 am and 9:00 pm.
Direct Hoboken to World Trade Center trains are also returning to the weekend schedule. The days of suffering through miserable weekend reroutes and endless transfers to get into Manhattan are finally over.
Railway News reports that these historic weekend restorations are a direct result of the extra revenue and newly hired train operators.
Your daily commute might cost a tiny bit more starting Monday, but getting home after a Saturday night out in the city is about to become an absolute breeze.
