The celestial shows just keep coming this year. If you are already wondering when you can catch the next shooting stars streaking across the sky, it is time to mark your calendars for the Orionid meteor shower.
Active every year in October, the Orionids are a medium-strength shower famous for some of the brightest and fastest streaking stars.
In 2026, the active period runs from October 2 to November 7, giving stargazers plenty of time to look up.
When does the meteor shower peak?
The Orionids will officially peak on the night of October 21 into the early morning of October 22, 2026. During a normal year, you can expect to see up to 20 meteors per hour.
However, there is a slight catch for 2026. The moon will be in a waxing gibbous phase, meaning it will be about 80% full. Because moonlight can easily wash out shooting stars, the best dark skies for this shower’s peak will only be available for a few hours between moonset and dawn.

If you want to impress your friends during your stargazing trip, here is a fun fact: the Orionids are actually created by debris left behind by Comet Halley.
Halley takes around 76 years to make a complete revolution around the sun, and it will not be visible from Earth again until 2061. The meteors are named after the constellation Orion because they seem to emerge or radiate from that same area in the sky.
How to see the Orionids near NYC
You do not need any special equipment or skills to view a meteor shower. All you really need is a clear sky, lots of patience, and a secluded viewing spot away from the city lights.
If you are willing to take a road trip, head to Cherry Springs State Park. Located in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, this 82-acre haven is practically legendary among astronomers. It holds the title of the darkest sky on the East Coast, giving you an unobstructed, 360-degree view without a single glowing storefront in sight.
Once you have found your spot, lie down on the ground and look up. Your eyes may take 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark. Be sure to dress for the weather, pack a comfortable blanket or chair, and enjoy the waiting game.
