When NYC finally eliminated the “Tampon Tax” back in July, it was seen as a step in the right direction towards gender equality. But let’s not forget, it was just one step along a much longer road.
One Manhattan pharmacy have taken it upon themselves to close the gap between the sexes even further by introducing a 7% “Man Tax”.
The owner, Jolie Alony, told the Daily Dot in a recent interview:
“We thought it’d be a great idea with all the political things going on—with Clinton being such a woman and the other guy and his womanizing, […] We wanted to share that women deserve to get a break, and men deserve to be charged 7 percent more. Women are spending more in general and we make less, so we deserve to have a break.”
It is unlikely that the “tax” will last very long, as the Daily Dot points out, pricing or fees based on gender is against NYC pricing laws. One way or another, the national coverage this “tax” has received, if nothing else it has been a wonderful marketing exercise for Thompson Chemists.
