A “world-class” public space is coming to the entrance of “Brooklyn’s backyard,” with plans to transform chaos into a vibrant community hub.
According to a recent press release, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn pulled back the curtain on a proposal to fundamentally reshape the entrance to Prospect Park.
The plan? Turn a labyrinth of traffic into a seamless, pedestrian-first public commons that finally connects the iconic Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch directly to the park.

From Traffic Labyrinth to Public Landmark
For decades, navigating Grand Army Plaza has been a challenge. The new proposal aims to fix that by:
- Connecting the Dots: Physically linking the Memorial Arch and Bailey Fountain to the body of Prospect Park.
- Safety First: Drastically reducing conflict points between cars, cyclists, and the thousands of pedestrians who visit “Brooklyn’s Backyard” daily.
- Transit on Tracks: Streamlining bus service for the 32,900 daily riders on the B41 and B6 routes who currently get bogged down in the plaza’s bottleneck.

Mayor Mamdani said:
Grand Army Plaza is the gateway to Brooklyn’s backyard, Prospect Park — and it should welcome New Yorkers with street design that puts safety first. Anyone who’s tried to cross here knows how dangerous and chaotic the streets can be. This redesign is long overdue and will provide a sense of ease and enjoyment to one of Brooklyn’s most important public spaces.
Community-Driven Design
This isn’t just a top-down mandate. The proposal is fueled by a 2024 survey where over 85% of 3,600 respondents demanded a design that prioritizes open space over asphalt.
The DOT is now moving into the final design phase and they want your boots on the ground (or your eyes on the screen) to polish the details.
- Thursday, April 23, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Grand Army Plaza (South of the Arch)
- Saturday, April 25, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Grand Army Plaza (South of the Arch)
- Wednesday, April 29, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Virtual Workshop (Zoom)

The Vision: Brooklyn’s New “Town Square”
Beyond simply moving people, the project is also about giving them a place to stay. By reclaiming the roadway, the city is restoring the original vision: a grand, democratic entrance to the park that feels like a destination, not just a thoroughfare. Next up:
- Final Scoping: Once the design is finalized this year, the NYC DOT will move into the capital reconstruction phase, adding permanent amenities, greenery, and protected paths.
- Feedback Loop: A community survey will be live at nyc.gov/grandarmyplaza from April 23 through May 31.
