Midtown Manhattan rarely gives anything away without a steep cover charge, a reservation months in advance, or a mandatory $20 cocktail.
But suspended above the rush of traffic and the throngs of tourists circling the New York Public Library’s main branch, a lush, elevated escape exists almost entirely off the radar.
Nestled atop the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL)—formerly known as the Mid-Manhattan Library—is a stunning, public rooftop terrace that offers breathtaking skyline views without spending a single dime.
The secret seventh-floor ascent
Just steps from Bryant Park at the corner of 40th Street and Fifth Avenue, the SNFL operates at 455 5th Ave.
The building, which originally operated as a department store, underwent a massive multi-million dollar renovation and reopened in 2021 with five gorgeous levels of browsable book stacks.
But its absolute pièce de résistance is hiding at the very top.
To reach this hidden oasis, walk through the main entrance, bypass the ground-floor bookshelves, and locate the elevators on the right-hand side.
A quick ride up to the seventh floor and a right turn through the glass doors reveals Manhattan’s only free, publicly-accessible library roof terrace.

A lush public lounge above Fifth Avenue
This wraparound, L-shaped outdoor space beautifully contrasts sleek modern architecture with landscaped green planters.
The terrace overlooks the surrounding Midtown skyline, offering visitors a staggering, unobstructed vantage point of the iconic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building across the street.
Locals in-the-know use the ample first-come, first-served seating to type on laptops, dive into a captivating new book, or just eat lunch far removed from the street-level chaos below.
Finding an elevated, open-air public area in this part of the city without a bar tab is practically unheard of, making this one of our absolute favorite hidden gems for the spring and summer seasons.
