Did you know that there’s a rooftop at one of the New York Public Library buildings that’s tucked away from the world, has gorgeous views, and is completely free to visit?! If you didn’t, we’re here to tell you all about it.
Being the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL), formerly known as the Mid-Manhattan Library, is nestled in Midtown, Manhattan you’d assume it’s a madhouse–especially since it’s home to a light-filled room with five levels of browsable book stacks, a center serving lifelong learners, a dedicated floor for kids and teens where they can get a behind the scenes look at books being sorted, and more. But the library is actually holding a big secret–its pièce de résistance, if you will–a stunning rooftop terrace.

The rooftop terrace was part of a multi million dollar renovation of the library which began back in August of 2017. Being the building was first designed as a department store it was quite the project, and since SNFL hadn’t been updated since the 1970s it was certainly overdue! Though the rooftop first opened to New Yorkers back in 2021 it still remains a hidden gem within the city. But, as we know, NYC is certainly filled to the brim with those…
The open-air space is open to the public to relax and soak in the sunshine. Being it wraps around the building it provides stunning views of Midtown, Manhattan–including 5th Avenue, the NYPL, and beyond–and visitors will find tables and chairs to lounge at while getting lost in a captivating book. Though keep in mind that seating is first-come, first-served, and they’re unable to guarantee availability.
And the best part: it’s completely FREE to visit!

How to find the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library rooftop terrace:
- Head to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (📍5th Avenue and 40th Street)
- Walk inside and take the elevator to the 7th floor
- Turn right when exiting the elevator and head through the glass doors
- Voila! Just like that you’ve arrived!
Though we feel like we’re still stuck in winter, this rooftop oasis is the perfect place to tuck away with a good book once it actually starts to feel like spring outside!
