NYC dating is so bad that a study finally backed up what our love-to-hate NYC icon, Carrie Bradshaw, had said all along. And now, in the modern world of dating, ghosting isn’t even the main concern—choosing to date in New York City is the real red flag.
Research from FetishFinder declared our chances of finding love in New York City as far from reality as the MTA being on time.
Although New York City boasts the largest population of singles in the country, the study notes that it’s still the worst city to begin dating. Don’t you remember the sad little statistic from last year that proved New Yorkers are among the least likely in any U.S. state ever to marry?
FetishFinder considered several factors within 20 of the country’s biggest cities to come to their conclusion. These factors included:
- The population of single people
- The likelihood of marriage
- The annual divorce rate
- The rate of individuals actively searching for a relationship
- The quality of life
- The cost of living
Considering the marriage fact we just shared, you can see how the data didn’t fare well for us. Not to mention that NYC is the third most expensive city in the world.

Moreover, a later study from WalletHub only reinforced New York City’s reputation for residents struggling to find love, as it ranked NYC as the 142nd worst city for singles out of 182 cities surveyed.
The New Yorker even made a humorous jab at the fact that it seems the worst city for dating is simply wherever you live. “[The] single, unifying, love-destroying element that nullifies all other variables, from housing prices to public transportation, is that you reside there,” retorts the article.
Alas, long ago are the days of NYC being the best place to find your soulmate. Until then, we’ll just have to keep planning solo dates—at least they’re cheaper!
