Winter is approaching quickly here in NYC, but the weather is as indecisive as ever.
Just last week, a surprise snow day wrapped the city in a shimmery blanket of white on December 14th, delivering postcard-worthy views from every borough.
The beauty didn’t last long, though—the aftermath brought a sharp chill, with temperatures plunging so fast that the city issued a code blue to make sure everybody stayed safe and warm.
With Christmas just around the corner, many New Yorkers are hoping that touch of winter magic makes a return. Still, in classic NYC fashion, the forecast has other plans: this Friday, December 19th, the city is expected to swing in the opposite direction, with shockingly warm temperatures set to replace scarves and snow boots, if only for a moment.
December 19th will see nearly record high temperatures for this time of year, with a high of 56 degrees. Staying true to the season’s indecisive streak, the warmth won’t last—by evening, temperatures are expected to plunge to a frigid 20 degrees. Our advice? Pack an extra sweater and keep that puffer close. This brief taste of spring is only here to deliver a very false sense of security.
Additionally, you’ll want to trade Sunday’s snow boots for rain boots—though you can certainly keep them on, as they’re impressively multi-purpose. From Thursday night into Friday, stormy conditions are expected, with heavy rain that could lead to ponding on roadways, paired with strong winds gusting up to 50 mph.
In true NYC fashion, winter is keeping us on our toes, so enjoy the sunshine when it shows up, bundle up when it disappears, and layer up for your holiday festivities. Stay cozy, stay flexible, and we’ll see what the weather decides next.
