United Airlines has launched the first direct route from NYC to Greenland, marking the first commercial non-stop route between U.S. and Greenland in nearly 20 years.
The inaugural flight took off on June 14th, 2025 on a Boeing 737 MAX 8.
The U.S. air carrier first announced the route in 2024 as part of United’s largest international expansion in history. United Airlines currently offers routes to more international destinations than any other U.S. carrier, serving 147 global points of interest.
In a statement the company said:
United will be the only carrier to connect the U.S. directly to Nuuk — the northernmost capital in the world, providing a gateway to world-class hiking and fascinating wildlife under the summer’s midnight sun
The direct route departs bi-weekly from Newark airport on Tuesdays and Saturdays, arriving at Nuuk, Greenland (GOH) in just four and a half hours. So yes, Greenland is technically just a day trip away from the city—think coffee in your NYC apartment by morning and dinner under the northern lights by night.
This nonstop route is seasonal, only operating between June and September, during Greenland’s optimal weather conditions and when tourism for the country is at its highest.
Travelers previously looking to visit Greenland from the U.S. had to make a connecting flight from Copenhagen. Rountrip flights on the new United route start as low as $1,093. United Airlines also offers routes (non-direct) to Nuuk’s GOH from Los Angeles (LAX), Boston (BOS), Washington, D.C. (IAD), Cleveland (CLE), Chicago (ORD), Houston (IAH), Portland (PDX).
The northernmost capital in the world is home to the Nuuk Art Museum, the Nuuk Boardwalk, Old Town & Colonial Harbour, Init cuisine and a chance to catch the Northern Lights depending on the time of year. The best months to see the Northern Lights in Greenland are from September through April.
If you’re looking for a tropical island destination over Greenland’s Arctic climate, you can book a trip on Arajet instead, a low-cost airline that just launched a new direct route from NYC to the Dominican Republic.
