Each summer, miles of New York City streets across all five boroughs close off to cars and turn into the ultimate pedestrian and cycling haven in what has been dubbed Summer Streets. And as the event gears up to return for this year’s iteration, New Yorkers can look forward to more car-free streets than ever before!
NYC Summer Streets will return this summer for five consecutive Saturdays–July 26th, August 2nd, August 9th, August 16th, and August 23rd. And to celebrate NYC’s 400th anniversary, New Yorkers will get to frolic through over 400 blocks of car-free fun, fitness, and live entertainment as the city’s streets transform into playgrounds for all to enjoy!
And, as this year will be the largest Summer Streets yet, New Yorkers will be able to travel the length of Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood, on a car-free route for the first time ever. Mayor Adams stated:
This summer, ‘We Outside,’ and we’re bringing everyone with us. From the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood — and across all five boroughs — New Yorkers will have more space than ever to walk, bike, run, and connect with their neighbors in their communities at our Summer Streets events.
The program’s hours will once again run from 7 am to 3 pm this year, ensuring more New Yorkers get the chance to enjoy the car-free zones (when first launched, the program ran from 7 am to 1 pm).
As part of this year’s expanded programming, DOT is partnering with NYRR to launch the NYRR Start Line Series, a new initiative bringing free, community-based run and walk events to Summer Streets geared toward beginner athletes.
In addition to the new races, Summer Streets will showcase a range of engaging public art installations, free cultural programs, performances, fitness classes, interactive art, giveaways, and much more. Lyft and Citi Bike will also offer free day passes for all classic Citi Bike riders (take advantage of the offer by using the promo code LYFTSUMMER25 on the Daypass tab of the Citi Bike App).

DOT Commissioner Rodriguez stated:
New York City’s largest public space is our streets, and when summer finally arrives, we want New Yorkers to be out in the streets — walking, biking, dancing, and connecting with our neighbors. Summer Streets captures that excitement by activating our streets and transforming them into public spaces that reflect the energy and diversity of our communities.
