Gansevoort Square is getting completely reimagined as New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO Andrew Kimball announce the future vision to transform 66,000 square feet into affordable housing, new retail space, and a chance to expand the Whitney Museum of American Art and the High Line.
Located in the Meatpacking District, on Little West 12th Street between Washington Street and 10th Avenue, Gansevoort Square’s redevelopment is part of Mayor Adams’ “Manhattan Plan” to add 100,00 new homes within the borough over the next 10 years.
Included in the Request For Proposals, Gansevoort Square will strive to achieve a goal of 50% affordable units out of the 600 new mixed-income housing to be created, in addition to ground-floor retail space. Furthermore, the NYCEDC outlines that this project should generate approximately $940 million in economic impact and could bring the opportunity to expand not only the Whitney Museum of American Art but the beloved elevated park, the High Line.
NYCEDC President and CEO Andrew Kimball said:
The redevelopment of Gansevoort Square marks a transformative milestone for the city by delivering much-needed mixed-income housing, creating more open space, while supporting beloved institutions like the High Line and the Whitney Museum.
Moreover, the mighty project will bring 2,600 construction jobs and 160 permanent jobs to NYC.
As part of the next steps, applications from qualified parties can be submitted through April 30th, 2025 for proposals for the below-market residential units without public subsidy under the RFP guidelines.
“We are building a new, exciting chapter in Manhattan to make our city more affordable and the best place to raise a family,” added Mayor Eric Adams. Learn more on the city press release.
