NYC public school students will be thrilled to know that they’ll be able to set their alarms for one less morning come the end of March. That’s because, according to the NYC DOE School Calendar For 2024-2025, schools will be closed on Monday, March 31st in observance of Eid al-Fitr.
Eid al-Fitr, meaning “festival of breaking the fast,” is the earlier of two official holidays celebrated in Islam. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-dusk fasting of Ramadan.
During the 2023-2024 Legislative Session, Senate Bill S1083 established both Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha as school holidays in New York City public schools. Eid al-Adha is the second of Islam’s two main festivals, falling on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijja, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar. This year, Eid al-Adha is expected to begin on Friday, June 6th, 2025, and end on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025.
While New York City public schools are closed for Eid al-Fitr, it’s important to note that not all New York State public schools are necessarily closed for the holiday–sorry kiddos, but we’ll cross our fingers for you! After Eid al-Fitr, NYC students can look forward to spring recess, when schools will be closed from Monday, April 14th through Friday, April 18th.
