Following a record-breaking blizzard that dumped nearly 30 inches of snow on parts of the tri-state area, the city is finally beginning to dig out.
While the mandatory travel ban was lifted on Monday and kids are set to return to school, getting around on Tuesday, February 24 will still be a challenge.
The MTA has been working around the clock to clear “Darth Vader” sized snow drifts from the tracks, but many lines are still operating on modified schedules.
Here is everything you need to know about the transit status for your Tuesday morning commute.

MTA Subways
Subways are running, but don’t expect your usual routine.
- Express to Local: Some express service will continue to run on local tracks for the Tuesday morning rush to allow crews to monitor switches.
- The Rockaways: Modified service remains in effect and shuttle trains are running between Euclid Avenue and the Rockaways, serving all stations.
- Pro Tip: Check the MTA app before leaving; field personnel are still salting elevated platforms and clearing station entrances.
LIRR
After a nail-biting suspension, the LIRR is officially bringing service back to six major branches starting at 4 am Tuesday.
However, “restored” doesn’t mean “normal”—here is the breakdown of the limited schedule:
- The Timeline: Westbound service kicks off in the 4:00 a.m. hour, with Eastbound trains following shortly after in the 5:00 a.m. hour.
- Branch-by-Branch Frequency:
- Babylon & Huntington: These are your best bets, running every 30 minutes.
- Port Washington & Ronkonkoma: Running on an hourly schedule.
- Port Jefferson: Trains will arrive every 90 minutes.
- Oyster Bay: Running every 2 hours. (Note: The first Westbound leaves at 5:26 a.m.; Eastbound doesn’t start until 10:45 a.m.).
- Montauk: Limited service is only running between Speonk and points west.
- City Hubs: If you’re heading to Jamaica or Atlantic Terminal, service is much more frequent, running every 20 minutes.
Metro-North
Metro-North will operate an “Enhanced Saturday Schedule” on Tuesday for the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven Lines.
- This modified schedule provides about two-thirds of regular weekday service.
- Connecting Services: The Hudson Rail Link connecting bus and the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry shuttle buses will both resume on Tuesday.

NYC Buses
Buses are currently running on a winter weather schedule.
- Detours: Expect rolling detours and curtailments depending on how well your local streets have been plowed.
- No “Slinky” Buses: Articulated (accordion-style) buses remain off the road. They have been replaced by standard 40-foot buses equipped with chained wheels.
- Expect significantly longer travel times.
Staten Island Railway (SIR)
- Current Status: Service remains suspended.
- Crews are currently on-site attempting to restore service “as quickly as possible,” according to the MTA, but there is no confirmed restart time for the Tuesday morning rush yet.
Bridges & Tunnels
- Truck Ban: The ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks was officially lifted as of 12:00 p.m. Monday. All MTA crossings are open, but icy conditions persist.
