Being a parent in New York City is not easy, and scoring a few hours of free time usually comes with a hefty babysitting bill. This summer, the city is stepping in to give caregivers a well-deserved break.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura have officially launched the city’s first-ever Parents’ Night Out, a free drop-off program happening across the five boroughs.
What to expect at the drop-off event
While parents take the evening to run errands, enjoy a date night, or simply recharge in quiet, kids will be treated to a fully supervised night of fun. The itinerary includes active games, sports, fitness activities, and arts and crafts.
Children will also get to participate in media education programs and nature exploration led by trained Urban Park Rangers. To make the evening completely stress-free for families, dinner will be provided for all participants.
The initiative was created to give time back to busy families. As Mayor Mamdani noted in the announcement, making the city more affordable isn’t just about lowering costs; it is also about giving parents a reliable, safe way to take a break without worrying about childcare expenses.
Participating locations across the boroughs
The one-night event will take place at select recreation centers, showcasing the year-round programming NYC Parks offers. Families can choose from the following neighborhood spots:
- Manhattan: Highbridge Recreation Center (2301 Amsterdam Ave)
- Brooklyn: Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center (3105 Farragut Pl)
- Queens: Al Oerter Recreation Center (131-40 Fowler Ave)
- The Bronx: Kwame Ture Recreation Center (1527 Jesup Ave)
- Staten Island: Greenbelt Recreation Center (501 Brielle Ave, across from Sea View Hospital)
How to register your kids
If you want to take advantage of this city-sponsored childcare, you will need to plan ahead. Space is strictly limited, and spots are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Families must register online between Monday, July 13, and Monday, July 20, and you are asked to apply for only one location. Walk-ins will not be permitted on the day of the event.
After signing up via the official NYC Parks website, you will receive an email with your next steps. Parents must complete a required event waiver by Friday, July 31.
Additionally, each participating child must obtain a free NYC Parks Recreation Center membership by Sunday, August 16.
Recreation center memberships are always free for children, but keep in mind that all participants for this specific event must be between the ages of 6 and 13 by August 16, 2026.
