But before the Fourth of July festivities begin, drivers are getting a small holiday gift: a brief break from moving their cars.
As New Yorkers gear up for beach trips, backyard barbecues, fireworks, and long weekend getaways, Alternate Side Parking rules will be suspended for the Independence Day holiday, meaning one less thing to squeeze into your plans.

The Holiday ASP Schedule
Alternate Side Parking rules will be suspended for two consecutive days in observance of Independence Day:
- Friday, July 3, 2026: Suspended (Independence Day Observed)
- Saturday, July 4, 2026: Suspended (Independence Day)
During these days, you do not need to move your car for street cleaning purposes. Meters will also be affected depending on the official holiday designation, so always check the specific meter box before walking away.
Crucial Parking Rules Still in Effect
While street cleaning is paused, New York City traffic enforcement does not take a holiday. To avoid a costly ticket or an unexpected trip to the tow pound, keep these strict regulations in mind:
- The 15-Foot Hydrant Rule: It remains strictly illegal to park within 15 feet of either side of a fire hydrant.
- Don’t Trust Painted Curbs: Many drivers assume painted curbs indicate a legal distance or safe zone around a hydrant. The NYPD warns that painted curbs do not indicate legal parking zones; you must manually measure or estimate the 15-foot distance.
- Blocked Driveways and Crosswalks: Standard safety violations, including parking in front of driveways, obstructing pedestrian crosswalks, or parking in designated bus lanes, will still be heavily ticketed.
