Live theater is slowly but surely returning to NYC!
In addition to Broadway shows making a comeback this month, off-Broadway musical theater will be making its debut again with the newly announced “A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet” — opening September 17!
And the cast has been announced now as well, with Bryonha Marie Parham (Prince of Broadway, “The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!“) starring in the titular role of Regina Comet.
According to producer Cody Lassen, here’s the story the hilarious musical “about friendship, creativity, ambition, ageism, and finding your inner voice” follows:
Two lifelong friends, Man 2 and Other Man (those are their birth names), have reached an impasse in their writing partnership. Then, one day, they get a phone call from Regina Comet, once the most famous pop star in the world, now a woman imprisoned by fame and trying to reclaim her place in the cultural conversation. She tasks the two with the biggest assignment of their lives: to write a commercial jingle… for Regina Comet.
As pressure mounts, alliances form, and the music gets even more awesome, the two men and Regina must confront each other—and ultimately themselves—to move through their conflicts of interest and finally reveal their inner goddesses.
The show is the work of veteran actors Alex Wyse (of the digital series “Indoor Boys” and Deaf West’s recent “Spring Awakening” revival) and Ben Fankhauser (cast member, “Newsies” and “Beautiful”). They both wrote the entire book, music and lyrics — and will also be starring in the show itself (along with Bryonha as Regina, of course)!
Previews will begin on Friday, September 17, with opening night scheduled for Monday, September 27, and showings will run through November 14.
It will take place at the Daryl Roth Theatre in Union Square, the newest addition to the off-Broadway scene in NYC in the former annex of the Union Square Savings Bank.
