Halloween is officially in the rearview mirror, which means our favorite city is now ready to shift into full festive mode! And New York has its own time-honored December magic: rolling back the clock nearly a century aboard the city’s beloved vintage subway cars.
Whether you want to channel your inner 1930s commuter or take in the subway’s mid-century aesthetic, here is everything you need to know about stepping aboard NYC’s most iconic tracks this season.
The Ultimate NYC Winter Tradition: Holiday Nostalgia Rides
Every December, the New York Transit Museum pulls its legendary vintage fleet out of the yard and places it right back onto regular subway tracks for its annual Holiday Nostalgia Rides.
Stepping into these carriages is a cinematic experience:
- Vintage interiors: Rattan woven seats, ceiling ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs, and genuine leather hanging straps.
- Period adverts: Authentic, retro posters lining the walls advertising long-forgotten department stores, shoe polishes, and 1930s Broadway shows.
- Period-dress straphangers: Riders often lean into the charm, dressing up in sharp fedoras, cloche hats, zoot suits, and flapper coats, accompanied by impromptu swing dancing on the platform.
Best of all, these holiday rides are famously accessible—operating at normal subway fares so you won’t break your holiday gift budget.

Where Do Things Stand for the 2026 Holiday Schedule?
While the Holiday Nostalgia Rides are an annual December staple, the official schedule, routes, and dates for this winter’s rides have not yet been announced.
The New York Transit Museum generally rolls out the official lineup one to two months in advance. In past years, festive runs have operated on Sundays throughout December along dedicated lines between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Transit lovers should keep an eye on the New York Transit Museum announcements to snag updates the second the December schedule drops.
Don’t Want to Wait? Hop Aboard the November Redbird Excursion
If you can’t wait until December to get your vintage transit fix, you don’t have to! The museum is hosting a special pre-holiday run this November featuring one of the system’s most recognizable fleets: the Redbirds.
These bright-red cars served city straphangers from 1959 through 2003, and they’re hitting the rails again for a rare excursion:
- Event: Fly Away Redbirds
- Date & Times: Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM ET
- Departure Point: The historic Old South Ferry Station—a 1905 loop station that has been closed to the public since 2017. Riders get platform access before departure to admire original tile mosaics and terracotta arches.
- The Route: A 90- to 100-minute round trip heading north through Manhattan up to the Bronx, complete with an exclusive behind-the-scenes detour through an active train yard before heading back downtown.

Grab your coats, keep your tap-to-pay ready, and prepare to step into a bygone era of NYC transit!
