Just in case you weren’t sure, the NYC heat wave has officially arrived, and today we’ll reach the peak of the extreme weather.
How extreme, you ask? Very. If you haven’t already mapped out your local cooling center and nearby water sprayers, now is the time to take a peek.
The temps are no joke, and safety is of the utmost priority during intense conditions like these — New York State is currently in a State of Emergency as of Sunday, June 22nd.
“I urge all New Yorkers to stay weather aware and take precautions to stay vigilant and safe as extreme heat and severe weather are expected to continue impacting the State over the next couple of days,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
Here’s what you need to know about this record-breaking weather.
NYC heat wave rivals Death Valley temps
According to the AccuWeather Forecast, Tuesday will reach 98° but feel like 104° in NYC, whereas Death Valley will reach 107° but feel like 111° — all in all, pretty similar.
When you take a look at The Weather Channel’s predictions, NYC will reach 103° and Death Valley will reach 104°, really pitting the two against each other.
If these statics aren’t enough to convince you of the super-crazy temps, we have plenty more: Since Central Park is predicted to reach a high of 99° today, it will break the same-day records from 1888 — a whopping 137 years ago — which came in at 96°, according to The New York Times. The publication further reveals that if we make our way into the triple-digits, it will be the first time Central Park has done so since 2012.
Needless to say, conditions are going to be overwhelming, so have a look at our guide for how to stay cool during a heatwave.
Should you experience a power outage, you can report the issue about any location in NYC — except the Rockaways, per 311 — to ConEd. (More information on this issue is available on 311.)
Stay inside, stay cool, and make sure to have plenty of water, New York. By Wednesday morning, we’ll experience a cool-down. Keep safe until those cooler temps strike.
