Get out the SPF and your most stylish pair of sunglasses, New Yorkers — we’re headed for our first real heat wave of the season!
We’re still in the sweet spot where a heat wave is tolerated (or even welcomed, as I think we’re all somehow still defrosting from a brutal winter that stretched into some out-of-character-for-the-time-of-year freeze warnings).
Even so, the National Weather Service describes what’s ahead as “unseasonably warm,” so we’re urging all New Yorkers to prepare in advance.
This particular wave will bring potentially record–high temperatures for this time of year, ensuring that even though we still have a month to go before the summer solstice makes its way to our favorite city, the temperatures sure aren’t waiting.
An early-season “Bermuda High” is set to push summer-like air into the tri-state area, bringing temperatures that could match or beat record highs on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Reports say the combination of heat and humidity could make it feel close to triple digits in some spots, with Heat Advisories potentially on the table.
According to forecasts from AccuWeather, Manhattan is expected to hit 95 degrees on Tuesday, just shy of Central Park’s record high of 99 degrees, which was set in 1962. Forecasters are also urging caution for anyone planning “strenuous outdoor activities” as heat and humidity intensify across the city.

Wednesday is, in fact, set to break its long-standing record. Temperatures are forecast by AccuWeather to soar to 97 degrees on May 20, surpassing Central Park’s previous record of 96 degrees, last set in 1996.

While sunshine is expected for much of the day, clouds and possible afternoon thunderstorms could develop later on, bringing the risk of localized damaging wind gusts.
The city’s “RealFeel” temperature could peak around 101 degrees, paired with a very high UV index of 10, meaning sunscreen, hydration, and shade breaks will be essential for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Though we’re still in the floraly holds of spring, NYC is about to get a full-speed preview of summer. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and if you suddenly find yourself craving rooftop sunsets, beach days, and oversized iced coffees, you’re definitely not alone.
