NYC’s Troop 6000TM was created so families going through homelessness could still participate in the Girl Scout experience, and now holds meetings in shelters across the city every single week. And, you can support them by buying your Girl Scout cookies right from their troop!
The program was built specifically to cater to the needs of this population, with meetings led by troop leaders who are also living in the system, alongside a community-based volunteer. It gives “girls the opportunity to make new friends, earn badges, and see themselves as leaders in their communities,” according to their webpage.
Though it looks like the Troop has already reached their goal, you can still order cookies to support them on their page here. The website states that “proceeds from every box sold help the hundreds of Girl Scouts in Troop 6000 go to Girl Scout camp, earn badges, and do so many other fun Girl Scout activities.”
You can also donate to them directly, or even learn more about volunteering opportunities. If you do volunteer, you’ll not only learn about Girl Scout-ing, but about homelessness and socio-emotional work with children as well.
Or, you can use this filter on the Greater New York Girl Scout page to find your own local NYC Girl Scout troop that hasn’t met their cookie goal to order from. Happy eating!
