New York’s youngest movers have a surprising favorite escape, and it isn’t Jersey City, Philly or Austin.
According to U-Haul’s latest migration report, the top destination for Gen Zers leaving the New York City area is Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, the region that’s home to Allentown, Easton and Bethlehem, better known as “Christmas City USA.”

What U-Haul found
For its 2026 Midyear Migration Trends report, U-Haul analyzed one-way truck rentals from July 2025 through June 2026 and sorted them by generation, to see where people at different stages of life are actually moving.
For New York City’s Gen Z renters, the top five net-gain destinations were:
- Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton (the Lehigh Valley)
- Harrisburg-Carlisle, Pennsylvania
- Toronto
- Houston
- Los Angeles
The Lehigh Valley isn’t just a Gen Z thing, either.
It also ranked No. 3 for the city’s Millennials.
And the valley really is getting younger. Its population of 18- to 34-year-olds grew by nearly 9,000 between 2020 and 2024, putting both Lehigh and Northampton counties in the top 10% of U.S. counties for young-adult growth, according to the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation.
“The growing and talented population, particularly that of young people, is the secret sauce,” LVEDC CEO Don Cunningham said.
Why the Lehigh Valley?
For starters, it’s pretty close.
The valley sits roughly 90 minutes west of Manhattan by car, and buses run from Port Authority, so a weekend back in the city (or a commute, for the hybrid crowd) is totally doable.
Then there’s the rent.
The average one-bedroom goes for about $1,570 a month in Allentown and $1,646 in Bethlehem, according to RentCafe.
Compare that with Manhattan, where the median rent hit a record $5,295 a month this June, according to a Corcoran report.
A Gen Z-friendly scene
It isn’t just cheaper. The valley has plenty to keep a 20-something busy:
- Live music: Bethlehem’s SteelStacks hosts concerts on the grounds of the old Bethlehem Steel plant, and every summer it throws Musikfest, the country’s largest free, non-gated music festival, with 500+ performances across 16 stages over 10 days.
- College-town energy: Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Lafayette College in Easton and Muhlenberg College in Allentown keep the coffee shops, bars and bookstores buzzing.
- Easy escapes: The Pocono Mountains are a short drive away for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Meet ‘Christmas City USA’
The valley’s best-known town takes the holidays very seriously.
Bethlehem got its name on Christmas Eve in 1741, when its Moravian founders were so moved by their candlelit vigil that they named the settlement after Jesus’ birthplace.
In 1937, the city officially branded itself “Christmas City, USA” with thousands of lights and a giant star. Two years later, Bethlehem Steel donated a 91-foot steel star that still glows from South Mountain every night, visible from more than 20 miles away.
The holiday spirit peaks with Christkindlmarkt, the European-style Christmas market that returns to SteelStacks from November 13 to December 20, set against the illuminated blast furnaces of the old Bethlehem Steel plant.
Where the rest of New York is moving
Every generation of New Yorkers has its own escape plan, according to U-Haul:
- Gen Z: the Lehigh Valley
- Millennials: Central New Jersey
- Gen X: Central New Jersey
- Boomers: Miami
Not ready to pack the U-Haul? The Lehigh Valley also makes a pretty perfect holiday day trip.
