Artistry is everywhere in NYC—from the colorful murals in the subways to the magic of its cinemas. And just when we thought the city couldn’t surprise us anymore, here’s a delightful reminder that NYC is truly the world’s cinephile capital.
According to a recent press release, The NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), together with Art House New York (AHNY), has announced the very first Art House Cinema Week, running March 20–26, 2026.
This week-long celebration is all about shining a spotlight on the city’s beloved independent theaters. New Yorkers can dive back into the joy of the big screen with free and affordable screenings, exclusive perks, and world-class programming—perfect for rediscovering that movie-magic feeling in a city that feels right out of the films themselves.

Independent cinemas are more than just places to watch films—they’re cultural anchors and vibrant community hubs. Yet, in an era of rising costs, these beloved institutions face real challenges. Art House Cinema Week is here to celebrate and support them by aiming to:
- Drive Attendance: Encourage New Yorkers to visit local gems they may have overlooked.
- Strengthen the Creative Economy: Support the venues and staff that make NYC a global media leader.
- Foster Collaboration: Use the AHNY alliance to solve shared challenges across the independent exhibition sector.

Rafael Espinal, MOME Commissioner said:
At a time when many New Yorkers and independent theaters are feeling the squeeze of the affordability crisis, we’re stepping in with a simple way to open doors and strengthen our creative ecosystem.
🎟️ 5,000 Free Tickets
To ensure that Cinema Week is accessible to all, MOME is funding 5,000 free tickets to be redeemed at select participating theaters. This initiative removes the financial barrier to entry, allowing working families and students to experience high-quality cinema.
