The wait is over, and the chaos has officially begun. NYC’s first-ever free grocery store, The Polymarket, opened its doors in the West Village on Thursday, February 12–and to the surprise of absolutely no one, New Yorkers ran.
With lines stretching blocks, the buzz is real. But if you’re planning to brave the cold, you probably want to know: Is it actually worth the wait? We took a look to see exactly what’s hitting the shelves–and eventually, the blue Polymarket tote bags.
The Free Haul Breakdown
Unlike typical pop-ups that offer a single snack, this is a full-fledged supermarket. Shoppers are generally limited to what they can fit into one provided tote bag (roughly 10 items) to ensure the shelves stay stocked for everyone.
Here’s what you can find inside right now:
- 🍅 Fresh Produce: tomatoes, oranges, avocados, peppers, potatoes, carrots, apples, bananas
- 🥫 Pantry Staples: Cheerios, pasta, Prego tomato sauce, Jif peanut butter, rice, bread
- 🍿 Snacks: Nature Valley granola bars, Stacy’s Pita Chips, Skinny Pop, Kind Bars
- 🥚 Refrigerated & Proteins: eggs, raw chicken breast, ground beef, chicken skewers, butter, tofu
- 🧃 Beverages: orange juice, bottled water, Prime Energy Drinks
- 🧻 Household Essentials: Tide Pods, toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, dish soap
- 🧴 Toiletries: tampons, Aveeno body lotion
A Special Valentine’s Treat
Since the pop-up runs through the weekend, Saturday, February 14th will feature a Valentine’s Day Community Celebration. Starting at 12 pm, the store will be giving away free flowers and Valentine’s cards alongside the groceries–because New Yorkers deserve a little love, too.
How To Give Back: Community Donation Days
While the groceries are free for you, the mission is to nourish the city. Polymarket has already donated $1 million to Food Bank For NYC, but they’re inviting neighbors to participate in specific donation windows to keep the momentum going:
- Sunday, Feb 15: 3 pm – 6 pm
- Monday, Feb 16 (Final Day): 12 pm – 6 pm
Monday is the main donation day. The store is asking for shelf-stable food items to be dropped off, which will then be distributed to partner organizations across the five boroughs.
