Let’s be honest, NYC runs on takeout, and the incredible delivery workers who keep our favorite meals coming through rain, sleet, or snow finally have a place to recharge.
After years of planning and advocacy, the nation’s very first Deliverista Hub has officially opened right outside City Hall Park.
The brand new space transforms an old, abandoned newsstand into a high-tech oasis designed exclusively for NYC’s essential food couriers.
What to expect at the new Deliverista Hub
Serving the estimated 80,000 app-based delivery workers zooming across the five boroughs, this new facility at 249 Broadway is a massive milestone.
The hub was completely designed by workers, for workers, giving them a much needed spot to grab some relief during long shifts.
Championed by the Worker’s Justice Project alongside Los Deliveristas Unidos and backed by a million dollars in federal funding, the hub features an indoor space where riders can take a breather from extreme heat or freezing rain.
Organizers are currently finishing up the interior, but within the next couple of weeks, the rooms will be fully outfitted with comfortable seating and a dedicated mini repair shop for quick bike tune-ups and flat tire fixes.
24/7 e-bike charging and essential services
One of the absolute best features of the City Hall hub is the massive outdoor charging station located right around back.
Delivery workers can use a mobile app to access 40 different battery charging cabinets at any hour of the day or night.
This safe, secure setup is specifically designed to help curb the city’s lithium-ion battery fires by giving riders a certified, outdoor spot to swap out and charge up their gear.
The interior of the hub is staffed five days a week from 11 am to 5 pm, specifically chosen to help workers during the lulls before the lunch and dinner rushes.
Staff members are on site to offer a ton of crucial resources to the community, including:
- Legal advice regarding wage theft
- Guidance on street and e-bike safety
- Help navigating unfair app deactivations
- General support for the immigrant and courier community
Looking toward the future
While the City Hall Park location is a monumental win for the city’s delivery workers, advocates are already looking ahead.
The current hub does not feature public restrooms due to a lack of water hookups, but organizers are heavily pushing to see bathroom facilities included in future rest stops.
The Parks Department is already eyeing additional locations across the city, including a potential spot on the Upper West Side.
For now, this first-of-its-kind hub is a massive step forward for the hard-working New Yorkers who quite literally keep the city fed.
Giving our deliveristas a safe place to rest, repair, and recharge is a fantastic addition to the downtown landscape, and we can’t wait to see more of them pop up around the city!
