A fertility doctor in NYC claims that he has helped a couple have the first baby created with DNA from three different adults.
The unidentified couple had lost their first two children to Leigh syndrome, a severe neurological disorder that results in death within two to three years, usually due to respiratory failure.
Due to FDA prohibition, John Zhang (shown above with the child) from the New Hope Fertility Center in Manhattan, had to travel to Mexico earlier this year to help the couple to have the baby. The idea is to help parents have babies in the face of genetic disorders, something that is currently prohibited in the US. Doctor Zhang plans to present the details of the case at the society’s meeting next month.
The birth of the child was first reported Tuesday by the British magazine New Scientist.
