New York City drivers, exhale, and listen up!
If you dread the usual morning “musical chairs”—that frantic 8:00 am shuffle to find a legal parking spot while avoiding the street sweeper—we have some incredible news for you.
Starting this Friday, March 20, 2026, Alternate Side Parking (ASP) is officially suspended for two days straight.
Thanks to the celebration of Idul-Fitr (Eid Al-Fitr), the NYC Department of Transportation has hit the “pause” button on the most stressful part of owning a car in the city.
Here is everything you need to know to take advantage of the 48-hour parking grace period.
The schedule
- Friday, March 20: ASP is suspended for Idul-Fitr (Eid Al-Fitr).
- Saturday, March 21: ASP remains suspended for the second day of the holiday.
This means you can leave your car exactly where it is on Thursday night and not worry about it again until the Sunday or Monday rotation begins.
Does this mean parking is free?
Well…not quite.
While the street sweepers are staying home, it’s important to remember that parking meters are still in effect.
You won’t get a ticket for blocking the curb during sweeping hours, but you will get one if you fail to pay the meter or if you park in a “No Standing” or “No Stopping” zone.
While a 48-hour reprieve is a rare treat, the city’s rules are famously fickle.
We always recommend keeping a close eye on the official city alerts to make sure no emergency weather rules or random construction projects interfere with your weekend “vacation” from parking.
