NYBG welcomes orchids back to their garden but on a smaller scale than their typical Orchid Show.
Every February usually marks the NYBG Annual Orchid Show. The exhibition transforms the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a floral oasis covered in delicate, show-stopping flowers and installations.
However, this year in response to the pandemic, NYBG is still bringing the beauty of orchids into their gardens but through a more limited event. With indoor capacity reduced, NYBG is exchanging the traditional annual Orchid Show for their new ‘Spotlight on Orchids.’
The event will showcase some of NYBG’s favorite orchids from their world-renowned collection—with over 2,000 varieties—but with the addition of other plants from the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory’s permanent collection, shared the NYBG website.
Orchid displays will take over the Haupt Conservatory with a backdrop of ferns, foliage, aroids, and bromeliads to appear as they would in nature.
The garden’s horticulturalists have even designed ethereal floral creations combining rocks, vines, tree trunks, and other materials.
With orchids threatened by extinction from poaching, over collection, and destruction of natural habitats, NYBG practices the highest horticultural standards in orchid conservation to protect and preserve such a graceful species, said their website. This ensures the safety of the species and the privilege to display them each year.
‘Spotlight on Orchids’ began February 20, 2021 and will run through April 4, 2021. Hours of operation are from 10am to 5pm. Visitors can gain access to the Conservatory and Spotlight on Orchids with a Garden Pass + Conservatory ticket. You can reserve your tickets here.
NYBG shared that they look forward to the return of the traditional Orchid Show in 2022. But for now, visitors can still experience the amazing displays offered at ‘Spotlight on Orchids’ and admire some of nature’s finest plants.
