Just as summer plans start filling group chats, the MTA is hitting the brakes–hard–on the G train.
The agency confirmed a series of service changes along the G line in 2026, beginning this June, as part of ongoing signal modernization and track maintenance work. And for riders in Greenpoint and beyond, the first phase is a big one.
Full Weekend Shutdowns This June
The G train will not run on any weekends this June, according to Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher.
That’s a major disruption for a line that serves roughly 160,000 daily riders–and is Greenpoint’s only subway connection.
Gallagher criticized the plan, writing on social media that the shutdowns could have “disastrous impacts” on the neighborhood, affecting small businesses, weekend workers, everyday travel, and our wallets.
More Shutdowns Are Already Planned
Unfortunately, June is just the start. Additional G train outages are already scheduled throughout 2026, including:
- Two weekends in August
- One weekend in May
- One weekend in September
- All four weekends in December
A Frustrating Sense of Déjà Vu
For many riders, this feels all too familiar.
The G train was suspended for six weeks in summer 2024 for similar upgrades. While many hoped the worst of the disruptions were over, the MTA has said the signal modernization project will continue through at least 2027.
Some reports have suggested the timeline could stretch even further, with delays potentially pushing completion closer to 2029, according to Greenpointers.

Why This Is Happening
The service changes are tied to long-overdue upgrades on the G line, whose signals date back nearly a century.
To complete the work, crews need full access to the tracks to:
- Install new cables and equipment for a modern signaling system
- Perform critical track maintenance and repairs
What’s Next
Gallagher says she’s working to organize a town hall for residents to voice concerns and get more clarity on the timeline.
In the meantime, riders should plan ahead–because weekend service on the G train will be completely off the table this June.
