Traveling for a summer trip to the Jersey Shore is getting a major upgrade—and commuters are about to start seeing it roll in, quite literally.
NJ TRANSIT has officially unveiled the first of its next–generation Multilevel III rail cars, marking a major milestone in a more than $3 billion fleet modernization effort that will reshape how hundreds of thousands of riders move across New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia in the years ahead.
The new rail car is the first of 374 planned deliveries, kicking off a sweeping overhaul that also includes upgraded buses, Access Link paratransit vehicles, a newly expanded mobile police command center, and refreshed light rail trains already rolling into service earlier this year. Together, the upgrades point to one of the most ambitious modernization efforts the agency has undertaken in decades.
This isn’t the first time this year New Jersey travel has gotten a boost. New ferry connections and broader transit improvements across the region have been steadily reshaping how people move between the city and the shore, easing pressure on the usual summer routes and offering more options for peak-season trips.
10x More Reliable: Phasing Out 1970s Rail Cars
For daily commuters, the changes go far beyond aesthetics. Officials say the new fleet is designed for stronger acceleration, improved reliability, and a noticeably smoother ride—alongside modern features like USB charging ports, updated seating, enhanced accessibility, onboard security systems, and real–time information screens that keep riders better connected throughout their trip.

The new Multilevel III cars are engineered to hit operating speeds of up to 110 m.p.h. while dramatically enhancing the onboard experience. Riders can look forward to several key upgrades designed for modern travel needs:

The newly delivered Multilevel III car will immediately enter a rigorous multi-month testing and commissioning phase on tracks right here in New Jersey. Up to 40 additional new cars are expected to join the fleet and deploy directly into passenger service later this year, giving riders a first taste of the future of New Jersey transit.
