A NJ Path train fire broke out on Monday, August 4th around 6:15am at Newport Station in Jersey City.
The event particularly impacted routes between Midtown Manhattan and Jersey City, as well as the World Trade Center and Hoboken. Service was delayed on two lines for roughly 5 hours, per The New York Times.
According to viral footage circulating social media, passengers were inside the train car as smoke began to rise, and they rushed to get onto the platform to safety. Officials revealed that 13 commuters were treated for smoke inhalation.
Though this all took place before the major morning commute got underway, straphangers certainly felt the effects later in the day. Here’s what’s going on now.
Service updates following NJ Transit train fire
At the time of publication, 12:15pm on Monday, service returned to normal. Port Authority revealed that trains were running smoothly beginning around 11am. Additionally, NJ Transit, NY Waterway, and buses cross-honored PATH tickets for riders who needed to find. new morning routes in light of suspended service.
