Paramus, New Jersey has spent decades perfecting the art of retail therapy. It is the oldest mall in the state after all, dating back to 1957.
But now, its most famous mall has added a literal “Dopamine Land” to its endless list of entertainment options!
Inside Westfield Garden State Plaza, visitors can step into a vivid, 10-room playground built around the small things that make brains happy: a bubble-filled ball pit, infinity mirrors, a pillow-fight room, neon-lit installations, scented sensory moments, and enough color to make a gray fall afternoon feel like it has been edited by a candy company.

The 45-minute, all-ages experience is called Dopamine Land: A Multisensory Experience, and it’s currently open inside the former Lord & Taylor space at Westfield Garden State Plaza.
Here are all the details on why you need to add this to your weekend plans before year’s end.
A full dose of fun inside New Jersey’s retail capital
Garden State Plaza is not New Jersey’s largest mall, but it is the state’s second-largest, with roughly 2.1 million square feet of retail space.
It opened in 1957 as New Jersey’s first suburban shopping mall, helping make Paramus into the shopping powerhouse it is today.
That history gives the new experience a little extra poetry. A place built for browsing, buying, and escaping into air-conditioned retail now has a whole attraction designed around the pursuit of happiness itself.
Dopamine Land uses media, technology, tactile play, visual illusions, and sound to create what its organizers describe as a multisensory journey.
Rather than moving through a traditional exhibit with labels on a wall, visitors walk through room after room of interactive scenes intended to be touched, explored, photographed, and generally enjoyed with zero need to pretend you are too old for a ball pit.

Expect ball pits, infinity mirrors, and a pillow-fight room
Dopamine Land is designed as a series of immersive spaces, each with its own visual and sensory hook.
Among the rooms are an infinity-mirror environment, a Bubble Bar filled with balls, and a dedicated pillow-fight room.
Expect playful optical illusions, oversized objects, projections, colorful light installations, and moments that invite you to slow down, get silly, and take the sort of photos that make your friends ask, “Where exactly is this?”
The experience takes around 45 minutes, though guests may be able to linger longer depending on the day and crowd flow and it’s open to all ages, with children under 16 required to attend with an adult.
Garden State Plaza is becoming Paramus’ new downtown
Dopamine Land’s touch-everything chaos has arrived at Westfield Garden State Plaza during a much larger reinvention of the property.
The mall broke ground this spring on a redevelopment that will trade part of its vast parking footprint for apartments, new shops, restaurants, green space, and a more walkable town-center-style district.
Westfield’s transformation plan describes the project as a mixed-use community designed to combine housing, dining, services, entertainment, and public gathering space.
The first phase is set to bring 575 apartments, about 50,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, and a one-acre town green connected to the mall through a pedestrian walkway. Construction is underway on land that previously held parking spaces, and the first residents are expected in 2028.
It is a significant change for Paramus, a borough more famous for Route 17, huge retail centers, and carefully choreographed parking-lot turns than a traditional downtown. Plans for the broader multi-phase project could eventually include up to 1,400 apartments, a hotel, senior living, additional retail, and more public space.
Make a day of it at Garden State Plaza
The former Lord & Taylor space sits on the mall’s first floor near Garage A, between Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, making Dopamine Land an easy centerpiece for a Paramus day out.
Westfield Garden State Plaza has more than 300 stores, a movie theater, luxury shopping, and a long list of restaurants, so there are plenty of options to also do before or after a stop in for smiles.
If you’re thinking of heading over in the coming week, the mall’s first Foodie Week is also happening — and can give you all the more reason to go.
It runs through September 27, with special offers and menus at more than two dozen restaurants and cafés, including Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Fogo de Chão, Shake Shack, and more.
