The calendar says it’s 2025, but Night Owl Video in Williamsburg is taking a step back in time.
The 90s-inspired outpost, which is slated for an April 11th opening, is the mom and pop answer to Blockbuster that invites film buffs to revel in physical media: 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD, VHS, LaserDiscs, posters, and collectibles. Co-founders Aaron Hamel and Jess Mills met while working at Troma Entertainment and wanted to serve as “the future of film through the lens of the past.”
“We spent many hours browsing the walls of our local video store as teens, and we hope Night Owl Video is a place where movie fanatics and film lovers can come and celebrate all forms of cinema — not just the films that are being pushed out by Hollywood and streaming companies,” the duo tells Secret NYC. “Making a film from start to finish is an achievement, no matter the budget or genre, and we hope customers find one of their new favorites — both in our new release and secondhand titles.”
They say that the increased interest in work from independent distributors — and the fleeting nature of streaming services — creates a need for this old-school system and a break from our subscriptions. More than a retailer of new releases, vintage finds and indie gems, Night Owl Video will also serve as a gathering space for the movie-minded New Yorkers among us, offering signings, film festival participation, and beyond.
“Night Owl Video is more than nostalgic, it is a place to celebrate film and cinema in all formats,” the founders add. “In a time where streaming has become less convenient than ever and has shown itself to treat the art of filmmaking as ephemeral, audiences and distributors are being drawn back into the tangibility of ownership via the resurgence of physical media.”
We’re definitely looking forward to stepping back in time and perusing the store’s collection. Make sure you have your popcorn ready when you get home! See you in Brooklyn on April 11th.
