While our local NYC beaches are officially opening for the 2026 season, sometimes you just want to go bigger and better.
Thousands of New Yorkers have their eye on the expansive shores of Oneida Lake, where public swimming areas like Oneida Shores Park will officially reopen on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Spanning nearly 80 square miles, Oneida Lake is the largest freshwater lake located entirely within New York State.
It offers much-needed relief from the concrete jungle, sitting just north of Syracuse and providing the perfect weekend escape for city dwellers craving a sandy beach and cool waters.

While the Great Lakes are technically larger, Oneida Lake holds the crown for the largest body of water perfectly contained within NY borders.
Its sprawling waters make it a primary destination for upstate recreation.
Swimmers usually flock to two main spots on the lake.
The first is Oneida Shores Park, a massive county-run facility in Brewerton that boasts a sprawling, family-friendly sandy beach with shallow waters.
The park is surrounded by grassy perimeters perfect for picnicking, sunbathing, and playing beach volleyball.
On the eastern edge of the lake, visitors also love Sylvan Beach, a historic resort village that feels like a step back in time with its beachfront amusement park, local eateries, and massive sandy shoreline.
Beyond swimming, the lake is a hub for recreation.
Visitors can enjoy paved walking paths, campgrounds, and boat launches.
Amenities at Oneida Shores include bathhouses with changing rooms, picnic pavilions with barbecue grills, and kayak rentals for those who want to paddle along the coast.

Fans of the lake have been waiting for an opportunity to jump back in the water since the lifeguards packed up last fall.
On May 23rd, guarded swimming at Oneida Shores Park will finally welcome visitors back for the holiday weekend.
Early in the season, swimming is open on weekends and holidays only, before transitioning to every day in mid-June once schools let out.
For all of its amenities and remarkable size, a beach day here is incredibly affordable.
At Oneida Shores Park, admission is usually charged per vehicle, making it a super cheap day out if you pack the car with friends!
Keep in mind that swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are officially on duty.
