If your Con Edison bill has been giving you heart palpitations lately, you aren’t alone. 🫠
Between the “delivery fee” hikes and the lingering sting of winter heating costs, New York City residents are officially exhausted by the cost of simply existing.
But there’s a major silver lining on the horizon.
Following the success of previous rebate programs, the New York State Assembly has just proposed a massive $2.6 billion “Inflation Refund” program.
If passed, this would send direct payments of up to $500 to millions of New Yorkers to help offset the skyrocketing costs of utility bills, groceries, and gas.
Here’s everything you need to know about who is eligible for the “inflation check” and when the money could hit your account.
What is the $500 inflation check?
The proposal, spearheaded by Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, is designed to provide immediate “breathing room” for households struggling with the state’s high cost of living.
Unlike some previous programs that were strictly for those on public assistance, this refund is being positioned as a broad “middle-class” relief measure.
The goal is to put cash directly back into the pockets of New Yorkers who are seeing their paychecks eaten up by utility rate hikes and grocery store inflation.
Who would be eligible for the payment?
While the final details are still being hammered out in the state budget negotiations, the Assembly’s plan targets the “working class and middle-income” residents.
According to a press release, eligible residential ratepayers with incomes below $150,000 would receive a $500 check, while those with incomes between $150,000 and $300,000 would receive a $300 check.
In total, the movement would provide $2.6 billion in relief to New Yorkers struggling with the rising cost of utility bills.
When would the money arrive?
Right now, the “Inflation Check” is part of the Assembly’s official budget proposal.
For this to become a reality, it must be included in the final New York State Budget, which is due by April 1st, 2026.
If the proposal survives the final negotiations with Governor Hochul and the State Senate, New Yorkers could see these checks (or direct deposits) arriving as early as late spring or early summer 2026—just in time for the dreaded “AC season” when electric bills usually skyrocket again.
Is there anything you need to do to apply?
The best part? You likely won’t have to jump through hoops.
If this follows the structure of previous New York “Inflation Relief” checks, the payment would be automatic for anyone who filed a 2025 New York State tax return.
The state would use your existing tax data to determine eligibility and mail the check to the address on file or use direct deposit.
However, if you haven’t filed your taxes yet, this is your sign to get them in ASAP so the state has your current info!
