There’s something about a New York road trip that never gets old. Maybe it’s pulling over for a hidden waterfall, spending the afternoon at a quiet lake, wandering through centuries–old historic sites, or discovering a beach you’d never heard of before.
And if you’re planning to hit the road this year, one simple pass can unlock hundreds of adventures across the state, saving you from paying park entrance fees every time you visit.
What is the New York State Empire Pass?
The 2026 Empire Pass is an all-access vehicle entry passport managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Instead of paying a separate vehicle use fee ($6 to $10+ depending on the location) every time you visit a state property, you simply present or scan your pass to waive the day-use fee entirely.
Before you hit the road, there are a few helpful things to know. The Empire Pass is surprisingly flexible—you can lend it to family or friends, but only one vehicle can use it at a time. It covers day-use entry to more than 250 New York State Parks, beaches, boat launches, arboretums, and many DEC recreation areas.

Where Can You Go?
The pass is accepted at more than 250 state parks, historic sites, and conservation areas across 360,000 acres of New York State. This includes iconic bucket-list spots like:
- The Gorges: Letchworth State Park and Robert H. Treman State Park
- The Beaches: Jones Beach, Sunken Meadow, and Robert Moses State Park on Long Island
- The Wonders: Niagara Falls State Park (the oldest state park in the nation)
- The Great Outdoors: Thousands of miles of trails, boat launches, and deep wilderness preserves managed by the DEC.

Which Pass Is Right for You?
The Empire Pass comes in two versions: digital and physical. The digital pass costs $72, works instantly, and can’t be lost, making it the cheapest and easiest option. The physical card costs $80, arrives by mail in 7–10 business days, and is a great choice if you plan to share it with family or friends. Both versions can be added to the free NY State Parks Explorer app.
Whether you’re planning one summer of adventures or years of road trips, there’s a pass to match your plans:
- 2026 Season Pass: $80 physical / $72 digital (valid through Dec. 31, 2026)
- 3-Season Pass: $205 (valid through Dec. 31, 2028)
- 5-Season Pass: $320 (valid through Dec. 31, 2030)
- Lifetime Empire Pass: $750 for unlimited access with no expiration date
