Right in the middle of the Hudson River lies a secret island with a hauntingly beautiful past.
Just 50 miles north of New York City, you will find the stunning Pollepel Island. It is home to the majestic, crumbling ruins of Bannerman Castle.
You might think you have been transported to the Scottish Highlands, but this surreal destination is actually just 1.5 hours away from NYC, near Beacon, NY.
The History Behind the Ruins
The towering structure wasn’t built for royalty. It was constructed by Francis Bannerman VI, a Scottish immigrant who ran a massive military surplus business.
After the Spanish-American War, Bannerman purchased over 90 percent of the captured Spanish military goods.

His NYC storeroom was completely overflowing, so he needed a safe place to store his inventory. In 1900, he purchased Pollepel Island to build a secure storage facility.
By 1901, he built the gorgeous castle for him and his wife to reside in, mimicking the architecture of his home country.
He even used old cannon barrels and military hardware as decorative elements!
Legends and Tragedies
This island is filled with mystery. Long before the castle was built, Native American tribes and Dutch sailors believed the island was haunted.
There are even rumors that General George Washington approved a plan to use the island as a military prison during the Revolutionary War.
Tragedy also struck the Bannerman family multiple times, leaving the property to decay. A major explosion in 1920 destroyed a portion of the complex.

After the property was sold to the state, a devastating fire in 1969 completely destroyed the roofs and floors of the main arsenal building.
