Having a baby in the tri-state area is getting remarkably pricey.
According to a report by the New York Post, citing data from nonprofit FAIR Health, New York and New Jersey rank among the most expensive places in the nation to give birth.
For families in NY and NJ, the median bill for an in-network vaginal delivery is $23,000. If you require a C-section, that median figure jumps to $27,000.
These totals include lab work, ultrasounds, anesthesia, consultations, and hospital facility fees.
To put that into perspective, the national average sits at $15,700 for a vaginal delivery and around $20,000 for a C-section.
How costs compare across the country
While New York and New Jersey sit near the top of the price list, delivery costs vary wildly across state lines:
- California: Median hospital bills reach $21,000 for vaginal births and $25,000 for C-sections.
- Alaska: Ranks as the costliest state overall, where vaginal births cost $31,000 and C-sections hit $42,000.
- Alabama and Mississippi: Offer the lowest in-network costs in the country, averaging just over $10,000.

Going out-of-network creates an even larger financial spike. Nationally, the median out-of-network C-section costs $43,000, with Nevada topping out at $79,000.
Meanwhile, North and South Dakota post the lowest out-of-network vaginal delivery costs at just under $21,000.
What families actually pay out of pocket
It is worth noting that these high numbers represent the sticker prices billed directly to insurance companies rather than the final amount paid by patients.
According to health research organization KFF, women with employer insurance plans pay an average of around $2,700 out of pocket for total pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.

Still, total healthcare costs keep climbing. FAIR Health data reveals that overall birth costs rose 3.6% in the last year alone. Since 2022, costs have surged 21% for vaginal births and 28% for C-sections.
These steep price increases come at a time when national birth rates continue to drop, with US fertility rates falling below replacement levels.
