Summer is basically on NYC’s doorstep, and if you’re already dreaming about trading subway sweat for water slides, we found the perfect excuse to escape the city this season.
Because as fun as a crowded city pool can be, nothing compares to spending an entire day flying down massive slides, floating through a lazy river, and pretending you don’t have a single email waiting for you on Monday morning.
Luckily, one of the Northeast’s most action-packed waterparks is gearing up for its highly anticipated return next month.
Just about an hour from NYC, Mountain Creek Waterpark is reopening for the 2026 season on Friday, June 19, bringing back its legendary mix of high-speed thrills, wave pools, cliff jumps, and alpine views that make it feel way more like a summer vacation than a quick day trip.
Whether you’re ready to conquer stomach-dropping slides or simply post up in a tube all afternoon, here’s everything to know before planning your first splash-filled trip of the season.
The world’s tallest double looping thrill slide & high-speed plummets
Mountain Creek Waterpark brands itself as New Jersey’s “most unique waterpark”–and it’s easy to see why.
With over two dozen different rides, slides, and attractions, it’s the largest waterpark in the area.
If you’re an adrenaline junkie you’ll want to make a beeline straight for the Canyon Cliff Drop. One of the waterpark’s most popular attractions, it lets you literally leap off a ledge straight into crystal blue mountain water.
Thrill seekers will also love Zero-G, the world’s tallest double looping thrill slide standing 100 feet above the ground and reaching speeds of 50 mph, and H2OhNO!, near-vertical body slide plummeting 99 feet down.
And for some friendly competition, grab seven friends for a head-first race down Surf Hill, a slide built into the natural contours of the mountain with zero gravity drops.
Lazy rivers & wave pools
If keeping your heart rate down–or at least a bit lower–is more your thing, the park offers park plenty of ways to simply float and catch some rays.
You can drift along the 1,600-foot Colorado River with cascading waterfalls, wild rapids, and enclosed tunnels, or glide from the upper Cliff Pool into the lower Springs Area along the River Runner.
Alternatively, the Hightide Wavepool is the perfect place to body surf or relax and soak up the rays–no shark sightings possible!
Younger kids have plenty of places to splash around, too, whether that be at the Sprayground, which features multiple water features, or the Fishing Village, a multi-level interactive water play fort styled like an Adirondack fishing shanty.
Waterpark After Dark adult-only nights
Whoever decided waterparks were just for kids clearly never experienced Mountain Creek after dark.
Returning for summer 2026 is the wildly popular Waterpark After Dark series, adults-only nights where guests 21+ get exclusive after-hours access to some of the park’s biggest thrill attractions–without kids, camp groups, or cannonballs flying at your head every five seconds.
That means you can race down iconic rides like Surf Hill, Zero-G, and The Vortex long after the sun starts setting, while DJs, glowing lights, and late-night summer energy transform the entire park into more of a nightlife-meets-waterpark experience than your average day trip.
Even better: attendance is limited, so lines are typically shorter and the whole vibe feels far more relaxed than a packed weekend afternoon.
The exclusive 21+ events will run on select nights from July 3 through August 14, 2026, though tickets are limited and these nights tend to sell out quickly each summer.
Everything you need to know to visit
Mountain Creek Waterpark officially reopens for the 2026 season on Friday, June 19, and luckily for New Yorkers, getting there is way easier than planning an actual vacation.
The massive waterpark is located at 200 Route 94 in Vernon, New Jersey, tucked into the mountains about an hour from NYC depending on traffic.
If you’re driving, the route is pretty straightforward: hop on I-80 West toward New Jersey before connecting to Route 94 North straight into Vernon. Bonus: the scenic mountain views start kicking in long before you even reach the slides.
No car? You can still make the trip happen.
NJ Transit riders can take the train from Penn Station to Salisbury Mills-Cornwall or take a bus route toward nearby Warwick and grab a rideshare from there for the final stretch. Going with a group of friends definitely makes the rideshare situation easier–and cheaper.
Single-day tickets, season passes, cabana rentals, and Waterpark After Dark passes are all currently available for purchase ahead of opening weekend. Tickets start at $59.99 + fees.
