New York is home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks. It seems like there’s something breathtaking and immersive around every corner—from the soaring heights of the Empire State Building and the rich history of the Statue of Liberty, to…a historic mansion turned into a McDonalds?
Checks notes—no, that’s fully correct. Just 30 minutes outside of the city sits the country’s most beautiful McDonald’s location. Known locally as the “McMansion,” this unique landmark tells the story of how community action can save a piece of history. One fry at a time.

🍔 The History
Long before it was serving up Big Macs, the Denton House had a seriously colorful past. Built in 1795 as a humble farmhouse for Joseph Denton—a descendant of one of Hempstead’s founders—it got a fancy makeover in the 1860s, transforming into a grand Georgian-style mansion.
Over the next century, the house tried on a bunch of identities: funeral home, independent restaurants, you name it. By the mid-1980s, though, it had definitely seen better days. When McDonald’s swooped in to buy the lot in 1985, their plan was simple: tear it down and put up a standard golden-arches spot.
🖌️ Push For Preservation
New Hyde Park residents weren’t too keen on the mansion being transformed. After three years of legal battles and community pushback, the Denton House officially earned landmark status in 1988.
McDonald’s faced a choice: walk away or get creative. They went with the latter, restoring the mansion’s exterior to its 1926 glory, thanks to an old photograph, while sneaking in a single-story drive-thru out back. When it finally opened on April 13th, 1991, it became the only McDonald’s in the country living in a fully restored historic building. History never tasted so good.

🏠 Luxury Under the Arches
Stepping into the New Hyde Park McDonald’s is a wild mix of history and, well, fast food. You can still grab a 10-piece McNugget from a digital kiosk, but the setting feels anything but ordinary. A sweeping double staircase leads to a second-floor dining area, perfect for private parties or busy weekends, while the original porch has been transformed into a sunlit glass veranda, which makes for the fanciest Happy Meal eating experience possible.
