This May, one of New York’s most iconic landmarks is hosting a celestial celebration like no other. Green-Wood Cemetery is opening its historic gates after hours for MoonFest, a totally free festival dedicated to the beauty and mystery of our lunar neighbor.

MoonFest is a brand-new, after-hours celebration held on May 1st from 6 pm to 11 pm.
This immersive event brings together creatives, scientists, historians, and stargazers to explore the moon’s profound influence on everything from the ocean tides to ancient mythology and the future of space travel.
While the event is free, registration is highly encouraged.
Due to popular demand, registration is currently through a waiting list. It is important to note that all programming—including tours and activities—is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is essential to secure your spot in the various activations.
🌕 The History
The inspiration for MoonFest is rooted deep within the cemetery’s own soil.
Green-Wood is the permanent residence of John Draper, a pioneering scientist who made history in 1840.
Draper captured one of the very first detailed photographs of the moon, proving that humanity could bridge the 238,000-mile gap between Earth and our celestial neighbor through the lens of a camera.
MoonFest channels Draper’s spirit of discovery, inviting modern New Yorkers to look upward with the same sense of awe that he did nearly two centuries ago.

To ensure a smooth experience, keep the following “Know Before You Go” tips in mind:
- Check-in: Head to the Green-House at 750 Fifth Avenue (near the Main Entrance at 25th Street). You don’t need to print tickets; staff will check you in by name.
- Attire: Wear comfortable, sturdy footwear. The walking tours cover hilly, grassy, and uneven terrain that may be challenging in the dark.
- Accessibility: Most activities take place in the ADA-accessible Green-House, though the outdoor walking tours are not wheelchair accessible.
- Weather: Green-Wood monitors the weather closely. If a cancellation is necessary, an announcement will be made via email approximately three hours before the event start time.

Green-Wood Cemetery is located in the heart of Brooklyn. The main entrance for the event is at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street.
- By Car: While there is limited street parking in the surrounding neighborhood, public transit is highly recommended to ensure you arrive in time for the festivities.
- By Subway: Take the R train to the 25th Street station, which is just a short walk from the entrance.
